At the urging of my good buddy Kevin Weeks and his extensive Z100 and 92.3NOW shower radio research, I hereby unveil a recurring segment tentatively titled “Sick-Nasty Pop Song of the Moment.”
(P.S. If you don’t have a shower radio yet, get one. A healthy dose of pop radio every morning will allow you to get your figurative finger figuratively closer to the figurative pulse of today’s youth.)
My first thought when Kevin brought up the topic: isn’t this the same gent who saw Hall & Oates and dual Steely Dan shows this summer? Why the F should I listen to him about pop radio? Not so fast. This is ALSO the gent who saw Lil Wayne, Britney, and Beyonce shows this summer…on purpose. I think his pop pedigree speaks for itself. (Also, I think it’s good for society in general if readers of t t j m d know these songs. We’re all in this together.)
In any case, even if you’re indie as F, you hate conformity, you don’t give a S about corporations being all corporation-y, used to smoke cigs under the bleachers in high school during the homecoming parade, and perhaps you even paint your fingernails black, you should know about the songs that appear in this segment.
These are songs that all grown men comfortable enough to drink stacks of Tecate in public should likewise be comfortable singing along to, with other grown men (angsty, indie, or otherwise) at your side.
Think songs like:
—>“Since You’ve Been Gone.”
—>“Torn.”
—>“Always Be My Baby.”
—> Anything by Whitney Houston.
Understood? Good.
And so, the first entry into the SNPSOTM annals will be: Miley Cyrus, “Party in the USA.” It’s just so joyous. Sit back and listen.
And the next time you’re out crushing some Amstel Light with the broletariat, don’t be afraid to chime in when the public address system starts bumping Miley’s tune at a volume of 11. That’s one louder.
You’re welcome.
