After a hiatus since the first SNPSOTM post on Miley Cyrus’ infectious “Party in the USA” (which may or may not have spurred crowd surfing at a recent law school Halloween party), I return with another Sick-Nasty Pop Song of the Moment: Owl City’s “Fireflies.”
The official music video for “Fireflies” is a direct tribute to this scene from Close Encounters of the Third Kind, one of my favorite movies. You should also take a few minutes to watch it:
The first major musical project of Adam Young, Owl City has a sound unmistakably similar to that of Postal Service, but with a more fleshed-out sound and a greater array of instrumentation (listen to the string parts in “Fireflies). Owl City has jumped into the spotlight after releasing its album Ocean Eyes in July, which apart from “Fireflies” also includes the feel-good “Hot-Air Balloon” and the more pensive “Vanilla Sunrise.”
Plus the idea of an actual city with actual owls is just plain entertaining.

And of course no SNPSOTM post would be complete without a HMC-CU&CPSOM (Honorable Mention Chart-Climbing Up & Coming Pop Song of the Moment):
Thanks for reading everyone. Have a fantastic Veterans’ Day and a pleasant mid-November.
